Music: Atoms For Peace
If you like Radiohead then you will love Atoms For Peace. This super group is made up of Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Flea (RHCP), Nigel Godrich (Radiohead producer), Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M), and Mauro Refosco (Forro in the Dark). You can definitely hear the influence of Radiohead in their music, but it is a really cool collaboration that results in a “Radiohead with a twist” kind of...

Music: tUnE-yArDs
A totally unique sound-I was blown away after hearing tUnE-yArDs’s “Bizness.” The music is so creative and catchy. By playing with the panning of everything but the voice and bass in “Bizness,” tUnE-yArDs creates a brilliantly mind blowing sound…not to mention the music video is phenomenal. I really recommend that everyone checks this out. It doesn’t...

Music: Half Moon Run
I had the privilege of seeing this upcoming group perform live when they opened for Metric at The Fillmore in Detroit. Half Moon Run has such a young vibrant energy, they were the kind of opening band that the entire audience was sad to see leave the stage. The unique sound of Half Moon Run is created by their interesting rhythmic songs with their very pure lead vocals and beautiful harmonies on...

Music: Shovels and Rope
I have been lucky enough to get a taste of this duo early on because of my work at Electric Lady Studios-their management team. I was hearing this song playing in our lobby and started googling the lyrics frantically to figure out who it was because it was so good! I couldn’t find them…and that’s because their record was just released today. So basically, they are amazing. They...

Music: Amon Tobin
One of the raddest musicians I have checked out recently-Amon Tobin is the future of electronic music. First of all, his music is very unique and if you are at all into electronica it’s worth taking a listen. As cool as Rusko and as creative as Boards of Canada. Tobin’s live performance is truly innovative. The future of live DJ performance is here! You have to see it to believe it,...

Music: Rae Morris
Such a talented artist. I’ve recently happened upon Rae Morris and I’m already a fan. She has such a gorgeous calm voice. I’m not a huge fan of her piano playing tone but her voice and song writing is just so great. If you like a Nora Jones I would really recommend that you check out Rae Morris. I think she’s definitely an artist to watch out for!

Music: Porcelain Raft
“I will start out this evening with an assertions: fantasy is a place where it rains”-Porcelain Raft. I felt like that quote really describes Porcelain Raft’s music; a beautiful fantasy. If you are a fan of Bon Iver or Iron & Wine then I highly recommend that you listen to Porcelain Raft. I only recently discovered the music through the soundtrack to Skins, and I’m so...

Music: The Avett Brothers
Wow. How I only recently happened upon this band I don’t know, but if you haven’t heard of them then I highly recommend that you check them out. The Avett Brothers are a folk rock band but they really combine bluegrass, country, punk, pop, ragtime, and more in a very artful way. Each song seems to fit perfectly into the background of my day, and walking around with The Avett Brothers...

Television: Arrested Development
Although the show only ran for three seasons, it is, in my opinion, one of the greatest television shows ever created. The humor is definitely not for everyone but if you are at all into jokes that continuously build on each other, than this show is worth watching. I watched all three seasons in just a few weeks, and have already started re-watching the series. Honestly I find it to be...

Movies: Dakota Skye
While this independent film definitely didn’t receive much critical acclaim, I really enjoyed watching it. Dakota Skye is a story about a girl who is cursed with the super power to see the truth in any lie she hears. While it may not sound like an engrossing plot with that simple of a story, this coming of age tale is pretty well written in my opinion. Although it isn’t the best...

Music: Sleigh Bells
Sleigh Bells is a music duo from Brooklyn, New York City, formed back in 2008. I discovered them a few years ago when a DJ friend of mine used their song “Infinity Guitars” in a mix. Ever since then I have been pretty interested in the group. Their music is very original, it has a percussion heavy yet very novel sound. I really think that they’re a duo to watch because their...

Music: A Day To Remember
Although A Day To Remember has recently gained a lot of success in the public eye I have been continuously surprised with the number of rock fans I meet that do not know the band. ADTR is one of my personal favorite bands of all time. I’ve been listening to them for years now, and last year I was lucky enough to see their incredible live show. This band artfully melds screamo and rock for...

Television: Freaks and Geeks
I don’t know if it’d be correct to call Freaks and Geeks an “undiscovered gem”, considering that since its one season on air the show has only gained more of a cult following. I discovered this show about three years ago and just recently re-watched it. Freaks and Geeks is an ingenious classic about a group of teens dealing with high school in the 80’s. The...

Television: My So Called Life
You know that moment when a song says exactly how you are feeling? And hearing it makes you both relieved that someone else was feeling this way once, and thankful that they could put it into words for u. That’s kind of the reoccurring feeling I have while watching this show that ran back in the ‘90’s. While “My So Called Life” only ran for one season, the realistic...

Movies: Oldboy
What a story. If you are a fan of mind bending thrillers like I am, then please don’t be discouraged by the fact that it’s a foreign film-Oldboy is definitely worth watching. Without giving anything away, the movie is the story of Oh Dae-su, a man who is locked in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing why. His violent quest for vengeance and answers leads to a twist that worth...

Music: Mason Bates
Okay so, to describe the experience of listening to Mason Bates is a pretty impossible task because, well, his music is quite indescribable. A club DJ with classical training, Bates mixes electronica with with classical in a truly unique style. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform live with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra a few months ago, and cannot wait to attend his concert later this...

Music: Aeroplane
I first happened upon the music of Aeroplane when watching the UK show “Skins”. I had always enjoyed the soundtrack and really liked this one song called “We Can’t Fly” which I learned was by Aeroplane. The group is a belgian music outfit consisting of Vito De Luca, and used to include Stephen Fasano. The interesting mix of French House music and Balearic Beat is...

Music: Umphrey's McGee
I have to say that I am ashamed to admit that I have only recently happened upon Umphrey’s McGee. A jam band originating from the Chicago area, this group has been active since ‘97, and is still going strong. I was only just introduced to them through some college friends and had the distinct pleasure of attending a live Umphrey’s concert a few weeks ago. Seeing them live is a...

Movies: Wristcutters: A Love Story
An independent movie starring Patrick Fugit as main character “Zia,” Wristcutters: A Love Story is one of my all-time favorites. A story about a world where everyone who commits suicide is sent to sounds like it’d be depressing, but when Zia finds out that his ex who he killed himself over has also killed herself, he sets out on a quest for love. Don’t worry-that...

Television: Dead Like Me
Dead Like Me was a television series that aired from 2003-2004. It starred Ellen Muth as main character, Georgia Last. The show was an under appreciated comical drama about a group of grim reapers carrying out their duty to bring the dead’s souls to their final resting place while still living amongst, well, the living. It may sound like a strange fantasy plot but the show is really well...

Music: Wax
I’ve been a fan of rapper “Wax” for a few years now. Michael Jones got his rap name from his music getting stuck in people’s ears–like ear wax. Jones often works with his twin brother Herbal T and close friend EOM. His following has grown significantly from his ever popular youtube videos, namely “New Crack,” an insanely impressive free-style. Beyond his skill...
